As I prayed one day I ‘saw’ an image of Jesus’ eyes with the crown of thorns on the brow. The image conveyed to me both the suffering of Christ, his pain and agony, and also the compassion and deep love God has for all people. I felt compelled to paint this image. The problem was in capturing the two emotions in one painting. I decided this was only possible to convey in two separate images.

As these pieces developed each became a reflection of Jesus’ words spoken from the cross. The eyes closed painting reflected his cry, ‘My God, why have you forsaken me?’ and the painting with the eyes open, his words, ‘Father, forgive them, they know not what they do’.

I have tried to convey in art what I have felt in my heart, reflecting my personal belief and experience of God’s character as seen in Christ. By the mystery of Jesus giving himself, he himself absorbs all the evil, the pain, struggle, and suffering of this world and, through God’s redeeming love and power, it becomes transformed – redeemed.

My hope is that these images will help you in your journey of discovering more of God’s love and redeeming grace.
