I was asked to paint an image that encompassed the nine major faith traditions represented within the University team of Faith Advisors. This was to include the nine symbols belonging to those faiths.
I began by painting a cloud, the centre of which represents the source and goal of faith. There are many and varied names humankind has given to this over the course of time and the spiritual search. There is a sense however that it is beyond the limits of our language.
The light both beckons and reveals itself, draws in and shines out. We may see glimpses of this light revealed as we journey, as we gaze.
The symbols have been laid out equidistant in a circle, with no position of distinction. A circle represents wholeness, yet is symbolic of continuing journey, with no place of completion. In the journey of faith arrival can seem a goal, but somehow just as we feel we have hold of it, along comes something new to learn and discover.
The symbols have been painted emerging from the cloud. Each of them points towards something greater than itself.
